Fruits that boost your immune system - Shadowfaxx - 12-26-2020

Fruit is an underrated yet effective tool for improving and maintaining a healthy immune system throughout the year. Adding these five fruits to your daily diet will give your body the tools it needs to remain safe from external forces.

Oranges

Oranges are packed full with the immune-boosting vitamin C. Every variety of orange contains more than your daily recommended amount. Vitamin C can also prevent cell damage, encourage the production of collagen, and even lower your levels of the stress hormone cortisol, as well as your blood pressure. Making fruits that are high in vitamin C a regular part of your diet will help prevent or reduce the probability of a cold.

Grapefruit

Having the same type of citrus fruit can become dull and boring so why not mix it up by adding grapefruit to the list. Grapefruit is a great source of vitamin C, fibre and vitamin A, which is good for your immune system as well as your eyesight.

If you are on any medication it would be advisable to check with your doctor about the consumption of grapefruit as it has been known to interfere with the absorption of some medications, especially statin-based medications.

Blueberries

Blueberries are low in calories and are delicious when eaten raw or otherwise. It has natural antihistamines, which can help reduce inflammation and minimize symptoms, including the runny or stuffy nose. These tiny blue balls are loaded with antioxidants that keep you healthy, including flavonoids, that boost your general health and can keep you feeling energetic and active during flu season.

Apples

Apples are excellent sources of natural sugars and fibre. But there is a secret about the apple that you didn’t know is that the skins of apples contain quercetin, a type of flavonoid plant pigment that helps improve your immune system and decrease inflammation. So make sure to eat that apple skin and whole.

Pear

Looking at a pear, you would never think that it contains any vitamin C. Aside from having plenty of fibre and potassium, this freckled yellow fruit also contains anti-inflammatory flavonoids in their skin.

Along with these fruits make sure to drink lots of water and to have ample amounts of sleep to keep your body in tip-top shape.
